Butler Storage Reservoir is located in Warren County, NY in the Town of Queensbury, near the Buck Bee Road and Butler Road intersection. This impoundment was constructed on Butler Brook in the Upper Hudson River Watershed and functions as a water supply source for the City of Glens Falls. Historical data indicates that the reservoir was constructed in 1909.

The Butler Storage Reservoir Dam comprises an earthen embankment with a concrete corewall. Prior to recent rehabilitation, the dam was configured to pass water over the primary concrete drop inlet spillway and flow through a concrete arch outlet tunnel to Butler Brook. Structurally connected to the drop inlet structure was a gate house/intake structure with several intake pipes and valves. Additionally, the downstream slope had an access road ascending the face of the embankment from a distribution pool up to the west abutment access road.

Rehabilitation and repairs on the Butler Storage Reservoir Dam were begun in June 2008 and completed in June 2009 by Kubricky Construction Corp. The repairs and modifications were completed to bring the dam into compliance with NYSDEC dam safety guidelines and to continue to provide the City of Glens Falls with potable water. The repairs and modifications at Butler Storage Reservoir Dam included:

  • Tree and stump removal from the downstream embankment slope
  • SCADA system installation to monitor reservoir elevation
  • Decommissioning of the gate house and existing outlet pipes
  • Slip lining the deteriorating outlet tunnel
  • Constructing a new intake structure within the reservoir
  • Installing a new low level outlet and mid-level outlet piping
  • Retro-fitting the existing drop inlet spillway as a new valve chamber and gate house
  • Construction of a new primary spillway to safely pass the design storm event

The photos below show the condition of the dam before and after the rehabilitation.
