The Butler Pond Dam was originally constructed around 1914 and periodically upgraded through 1948 to attain its present configuration and attributes. It comprises an earthen dike at the northern extremity (North Dike), a concrete dike with earthen backfill at the southern extremity (South Dike), and an embankment dam with a concrete corewall and concrete spillway northeast of the South Dike. There is a 20-inch cast iron pipe and valve extending through the spillway with the dual purpose of lowering the reservoir for emergencies or maintenance and supplying water for the City.
Rehabilitation and repairs on the Butler Pond Dam were begun in June 2008 and completed in June 2009 by Kubricky Construction Corp. The repairs and modifications were completed to bring the dam into compliance with NYSDEC dam safety guidelines and to continue to provide the City of Glens Falls with potable water. The repairs and modification at Butler Pond Dam included:
- Access road maintenance
- Tree removal and dike embankment improvements at the north dike
- Removal of spillway obstructions
- Replacement of the 20-inch gate valve and installation of a metal deck structure to allow access to the valve operator
- Construction of a new floor slab within the spillway stilling channel
- Replacement of the wooden stop logs with aluminum stop logs and a portable stop log removal mechanism
The photos below show the condition of the dam before and after the rehabilitation.
